A Little Story About Me
Greetings everyone and welcome to The Record Bloke website.
Firstly, bloke… What does that word even mean?
For the non-UK visitors to this site or simply for anyone that is not familiar with this argot, the word “bloke” is nothing but a slang term for a man, common in some countries like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Since I came to live in the UK from the sunny and warm Spain I was always fascinated with this word so I thought: hey, that’s a cool word to feature on my website! Not only was I intrigued by the English vocabulary, but I had also been heavily into music since I was little, and strongly influenced by the very varied English music culture.
I grew up in a tiny town in the south of Spain where folklore music played an important part in the lives of almost every kid or adult I used to know. However, I quickly realized that such a genre was not my cup of tea at that time, and decided to go down a different road and explore other types of music.
The 90s, my desire for a pair of turntables and a musical journey…
Back in the 90s, I got heavily into breakbeat and happy hardcore. I remember hanging out with friends and messing about with records and turntables, trying to figure out how to mix tunes without having a clue of what we were supposed to do. I remember walking down the streets with my old cassettes and my inseparable walk-man… good old days!
My beloved family were a very traditional working class, therefore I was never able to afford a pair of technics. So, I had to accept the fact that I would have to continue popping into my privileged friends’ homes to use their equipment since their parents could squeeze a few pennies and buy a sound system for their children.
The second millennium kept shaping my musical likes and brought to my ears a mixture of new genres like hip-hop, house music, techno, electro and deep house. Whilst studying for my degree at Uni, I got a job as a waiter in a very local nightclub where I made DJ friends and followed them to every possible gig I was able to go to.
Coming to live in the UK opened a new world of possibilities right in front of me.
I got into styles of music that I never thought I would, I went to countless record shops and got talking to people that happened to be flicking through the very same shelves I was… And just like that, I fell in love with the wax again! The rest, as they say, is history…
What The Record Bloke website is about.
I want to be that bloke that helps you to dig out that jewel that once occupied a place in your record box, that tune that got you into certain music genre or the one that was played at that concert/festival/event/house party/club that is stuck in your head and that you would like to reconnect with and own as part of your collection once again.
And last but not least…
Ever since I thought of creating this website, I have understood the come-back of the importance of vinyl not only as the almighty return of the nostalgic format, but also as a way to interact with people around the world who I share common music interests with, and who I will hopefully become more knowledgeable with about genres and record labels.
I would love for you to come and talk to real human beings who are using this website as a social platform both to facilitate not only the purchase of records but also to talk alongside each other about our passion: MUSIC!
So have a look around and if you ever need a hand or have any questions, please leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.
All the best and happy digging!
The Record Bloke.
